Its a couple of things- there have been some regulatory issues with the Ecodiesel in the Ram and GC, delaying shipment of 2017 model vehicles. 2020 will bring even stricter emissions regs, and while the engine will be compliant when introduced, it just may not have been ready. There are costs involved in integrating and certifying the current engine, and that was likely deemed unnecessary for just 2 model years. Couple that with the fact that any new product launch is challenging, and FCA decided to start production with just one engine. Last, Jeep has been selling every Wrangler they could build without even trying very hard. Same will hold for the 1st year of the JL. Paying to deliver a 2018 JL diesel just wasn't going to sell any additional vehicles.
